Migration Timeline Estimator in AvePoint Fly
AvePoint has introduced an awesome new capability for their Fly migration service in the June 2025 release. Have you been struggling with estimating migration processing times? No more, as an automated estimation tool is now integrated into Fly.
In any major migration project, the answer to the question about migration run times and throughput has always been a challenge. How do you estimate this upfront to provide your customer with some insights on how long a migration like a Microsoft 365 tenant-to-tenant will take.
Performing pilot migrations and extrapolating run times was one of the typical approaches. Or, simply gathering actual run times from previous projects and using those as a baseline.
In the June 2025 release for Fly (the cloud-based version only), a new capability is introduced that will help to estimate migrations by pressing a button.
Within Fly's Discovery module, a button was added labelled "How long will my migration take?".
Using this button will start a configuration wizard, that will result in real-time, data-driven migration duration estimates based on scope, geography, and licensing as mentioned in the release notes.
Configuration
Pressing the button starts the configuration part of the calculator where the first step requires selecting the source and geographical location (“Continent”) of that source.
In the next step, you can choose to use the data from the tenant discovery and select the workloads to include in the calculation. Optionally, the scope can be customized.
In the following step, the destination configuration is done. So, both selection and geography (“Continent”) again.
The fourth step is about the licences, where we commonly use object based ones.
The fifth (last) step provides a summary of the configuration, after which the calculation can be started.
Depending on the amount of data, the calculation can take some time. There are advanced options available by clicking the ... in the upper-right corner of the page to configure the migration time factor. For further information, see Migration Calculator in the user guide.
Calculation results
After the calculation completes, the estimates are shown in both graphical and numerical presentations (different example).
It also provides the information considering the different migration streams (mail and content).
Conclusion
This new capability is much appreciated for any substantial migration. I will surely be using and validating this on the upcoming projects, and big thumbs up for the AvePoint Fly product team in providing this.
